The reason that I had shut down my system (before it came back up without LVM working properly) was to upgrade the RAM in it. It seems that when Abit claims that the KV7 can only hold 2xDDR400 modules it doesn't mean that with the addition of the third it drops the clock nicely to DDR336. It means that you'll start seeing all sorts of fun problems.

I started getting a lot of kernel errors with memory addressing. Memtest86 claimed that I had bad memory at addresses between 300M and 450M; but when I tested each module individually they worked. I dropped back down to the 2x512MB modules (leaving the third out) and now the kernel is running happily.

If only I had waited a few days to get the LVM working again...
